Maniac questionnaire Name Lisa Hurley How many marathons / ultra marathons have you run? 3 – Victoria, Ron Herzog 50k, Flat Ass (Pigtails) Cedar River What was the first race you ever ran? (Any distance) 5k Pumpkin Push (Seattle) 2006 What was the first marathon you ever ran? What year did you run it? Did you have fun that day? Victoria 2008 – yes & no…lost my first toenail that day! That’s when I learned you’re supposed to buy a size bigger shoes in case your feet swell. L How long have you been a runner and why did you start running? Since 2006…Was an 8-year biker (long-distance) & getting bored. Started to run, then added swimming & got into running races & triathlons. Something to keep active & fit. Why did you decide to become a Maniac? Or what inspired you? Andy Dunn (who will soon be a maniac after this weekend!) and also Barb Blumenthal. Andy told me I just “had” to run another marathon if I was already doing two in two months to get in! Barb is always tempting me with more marathons & ultras. I’m sure I’ll keep doing a few! Of all the races out there in this world, which one would you most like to run? Boston, I suppose. Victoria was really pretty though, too…I’ll probably do it again! Just about any trail run rocks, though…I prefer the trails! If you could run a marathon / ultra accompanied by anyone either living or deceased, who would you choose and why? Barb Blumenthal, Lisa Switzer, Timothy Shelley or Dulce Martinez (in Mexico)…cuz they all inspire me to keep running & running!! Also – maybe it would be fun to run with Lenny Kravitz (does he run?). J What was you most memorable marathon and why? Victoria – my first, very pretty, awesome day…my brother was there too & I saw him along the way! My daughter also ran the 8k & my other daughter did the kids run!! If someone asked you to pick a race for him or her that they could run a PR at, which race would you suggest? For 5k – resolution run. For 10k – Snoqualmie Railroad Days, For Half – maybe Seattle Half (but I’ve never done a flat course??)…and for marathon: Maybe Eugene (supposed to be easier flat course) or Victoria (but with bigger shoes!). What was the furthest you’ve ever traveled for a race? Ottawa, CN – 10k Physio run. Do any of your non-running friends or family members think that you’re crazy for running as much as you do? What are some of their comments to you? Yes, of course. They say I’m in-sane, nuts, obsessed, crazy…etc., etc. My brother can’t understand how I can drag my behind to the start line so often. If personal obligations or finances were not an issue, how many marathons would you run in one year? 2 marathons & 6 ultras – trails preferred. From what race did you receive your favorite finishers medal? St. Pat’s Dash – Seattle. It’s a huge medallion – 3rd place division medal. Another cool one is Whidbey Island – it’s recycled glass with a whale on it. Very beautiful! Where do you keep your finisher medals? In a bag…sometimes on my dresser…a few are in a curio (but only if I placed). Do you wear your race t-shirts? What do you do with the ones you don’t wear? Yes, but not to the race. I have a huge stack of shirts that I wear on days off (t-shirts are comfy!). Also love the tech jerseys for cold-weather runs…But I don’t like to wear them until after I’ve finished & “earned” them! If you could put on a marathon anywhere in the world, where would you have it? In the Northwest – somewhere in WA. It’s so beautiful here & I prefer cold-weather running! Maniac Yellow, or Maniac Black? Yellow!! What is your favorite pre race meal? Salmon & Potatoes for dinner & Oatmeal & raisin bagels for breakfast. Post race meal? Lots of protein (hummus, salmon) & carbs – rice or bread. What is your energy gel of choice? Hammer gel – double espresso. Sport drink of choice? Glucose or Propel grape. Which race would you never run again and why? There isn’t one. I’d always want to improve. Probably wouldn’t do Skagit Flats, though…don’t really like anything called “flat” unless it’s snowy (like Cedar River). What was the most challenging race or combination of races you’ve ever done and why? Hulaman Half Iron – Gaston, OR. I went there by myself, it was a first-year race. It was really odd being out there by myself…very few participants. I was the oldest female finisher. What is a typical training week like for you? How many miles do you run? Any cross training? Yes – must cross-train… 35-45 miles running, including races, 20-100 miles of biking (depending on season – daylight), 2-4 miles of swimming, pilates & weights during Winter mos. When biking less.
