How many marathons / ultra marathons have you run?  10 marathons and 2 Ultras

What was the first race you ever ran? (Any distance)     100 yd dash (in elementary school).

What was the first marathon you ever ran? What year did you run it? Did you have fun that day?
Saskatchewan Marathon (Saskatoon) – 2003 – painful > ran with more guts than brains.

How long have you been a runner and why did you start running?
May 2003 - Needed to do something instead of hockey > got tired of being bruised.

Why did you decide to become a Maniac? Or what inspired you?
Read Dean Karnazes “Marathon Man” & had to check out the Marathon Maniac website.

Of all the races out there in this world, which one would you most like to run?
Hawaii, Everest

If you could run a marathon / ultra accompanied by anyone either living or deceased, who would you choose and why?
My wife or my sister > my wife is now a runner, too > my sister got me into running.

What was your most memorable marathon and why?
My first marathon > I’ll never forget the feeling I had (pure elation) when I crossed the finish line.  My life changed that day.

If someone asked you to pick a race for him or her that they could run a PR at, which race would you suggest?
Regina QCM > very flat > hope it isn’t too windy.

What was the furthest you’ve ever traveled for a race?
Boston > I really need to expand my list of race destinations & do some traveling.

Do any of your non-running friends or family members think that you’re crazy for running as much as you do? What are some of their comments to you?
Yes, they roll their eyes, esp. when I tell them I run outside in the snow and ice during the winter.  They respond:  “Won’t it destroy your knees? “Your lungs will freeze!”

If personal obligations or finances were not an issue, how many marathons would you run in one year?     52

 

From what race did you receive your favorite finishers medal?
Sask. Marathon #1 – Very nice Adidas medal, Calgary belt buckle medal gets honorable mention.

Where do you keep your finisher medals?
I have them hung up in my basement office.

 Do you wear your race t-shirts? What do you do with the ones you don’t wear?
Yes.  The tech. shirts get lots of wear.  Older ones donated as new ones are acquired.

If you could put on a marathon anywhere in the world, where would you have it?
Northern Saskatchewan > nobody knows it exists > beautiful country.

Maniac Yellow, or Maniac Black?   Yellow.

What is your favorite pre race meal? Post race meal?
Pre - Chinese food.  Post – must involve ice cream.

What is your energy gel of choice? Sport drink of choice?  Gu gels – don’t like sports drinks.  Chocolate milk for post recovery.

Which race would you never run again and why?  Never met a race I didn’t like.

What was the most challenging race or combination of races you’ve ever done and why?
Sask. 50k Ultra 2008 – wind gusts up to 50 mph that day > easier to walk backwards.

What is a typical training week like for you? How many miles do you run? Any cross training?
Run 5 days a week.  Mileage depends upon goals.  Think I should x-train but never do.

Do you have a training partner? If so, who is it?
Group runs w/ Brainsport Run Club on Wed. & Sat., then SRRA workouts on Mondays.

What kind of shoes do you train in? Do you race in a different shoe?
Only Brooks Adrenaline.  Tried many but those shoes work the best for me.

What are your short-term running goals?  Improve overall strength, get faster.

What are your long-term running goals?
Run more marathons in 2010 than this year > including a 50 mile Ultra – something new.

Assuming you have time, what do you do for fun other than run marathons?
Love to golf and downhill ski.  Trail running in the mountains by Canmore, & Banff.

Who is your favorite Super Hero? Superman, Wonder Woman, Main Maniac (with cat on head), non Maniac Beauty?  Batman.
