Maniac questionnaire Name: Trey Lominack Maniac #1811 How many marathons / ultra marathons have you run? 3/1 What was the first race you ever ran? (Any distance): 5K What was the first marathon you ever ran? What year did you run it? Did you have fun that day? Spinx Marathon 2008 - Despite a barking mad IT Band, I had a fantastic time. How long have you been a runner and why did you start running? I’ve been an on and off runner for 25 years. Only recently, did I begin running with purpose and consistency. I began running again, which I consider my true start, in late September 2008. My wife and I were sitting on our screened-in porch watching the neighborhood runners and walkers go by. I had been struggling with what I can only describe as mid-life crisis type issues. I needed something in my life to challenge me in a positive way, something that could give me a sense of accomplishment. So, I got up from the chair on the porch, told my wife I was going to buy some running shoes, and the rest is history. Why did you decide to become a Maniac? Or what inspired you? I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know a few other maniacs. All of them are awesome people. But I suppose the true inspiration is being in an organization with other like minded people - those who see multiple marathoning/ultramarathoning as a normal healthy behavior. Of all the races out there in this world, which one would you most like to run? It’s a toss up among several but for now, I’d say Big Sur. I hear the scenery is drop dead gorgeous and the runners are awesome. If you could run a marathon / ultra accompanied by anyone either living or deceased, who would you choose and why? Albert Einstein - because I’m a nerd and would love to pick his brain - and also because he had a great sense of humor. What was your most memorable marathon and why? San Francisco. It’s a great city and the marathon route is along a ton of stimuli. If someone asked you to pick a race for him or her that they could run a PR at, which race would you suggest? None of them that I’ve done that’s for sure, good god the hills. I’d probably suggest a winter race in Florida...but not Disney. Maybe Jacksonville. I know a guy who BQ’d there. What was the furthest you’ve ever traveled for a race? Approximately 2600 miles (SC to Cali). Do any of your non-running friends or family members think that you’re crazy for running as much as you do? What are some of their comments to you? Of course they do. Some of my favorite comments are: If personal obligations or finances were not an issue, how many marathons would you run in one year? Tough one to answer. I would run one per month for sure. It would be cool to run 365 in one year. From what race did you receive your favorite finishers medal? Lynch’s Woods 50K - RD Terri Hayes hand made the finishers awards, a wood cut out of South Carolina attached to a lanyard. Where do you keep your finisher medals? Do you wear your race t-shirts? What do you do with the ones you don’t wear? If you could put on a marathon anywhere in the world, where would you have it? - The Sahara Desert. Maniac Yellow, or Maniac Black? - Yellow, I guess. I love the red, however. What is your favorite pre race meal? Post race meal? Pre-race: Pizza and potatoes. Post race - after some real nutrition, I go for a bacon cheese burger and fries (especially if it’s Five-Guys). What is your energy gel of choice? Sport drink of choice? Accel-gel. I like cytomax most of the time but it can get too sweet toward the end of a race. Which race would you never run again and why? Spinx. No port-o-potties! I mean, WTF? Race day organization could be better too. What was the most challenging race or combination of races you’ve ever done and why? Doing a trail 50K followed by a mountain marathon in rainy windy conditions 4 weeks later. That really tested my mental toughness. What is a typical training week like for you? How many miles do you run? Any cross training? I try to get out 4 to 5 days a week. Long runs on the weekends. Mileage is anywhere from 35 - 55 miles right now. I cross train somewhat...I’ve been slacking in this area but yes, I XT. Do you have a training partner? If so, who is it? I run with different people. My buddy Matt has usually been my long run partner but he moved recently. My other buddy Grant is also a long run partner but he has an injured MCL. I don’t know anyone else who runs my pace and distances. What kind of shoes do you train in? Do you race in a different shoe? I train and run in the same shoes. My mainstay is Mizuno Inspire. I dabble in New Balance and Brooks. What are your short-term running goals? Complete a 50 miler and BQ one day. What are your long-term running goals? 50 marathons in 50 states. Maybe see if I can qualify and complete Western States or some crazy thing like that. Assuming you have time, what do you do for fun other than run marathons? I home brew - I mean, what’s a post run/race without good beer? Who is your favorite Super Hero? Superman, Wonder Woman, Main Maniac (with cat on head), non Maniac Beauty? Superman. It used to be Batman (childhood fav) but the movies ruined that for me. |
