Maniac questionnaire Name: Lynn Crim Maniac #: 1890 How many marathons / ultra marathons have you run? 13 Marathons What was the first race you ever ran? (Any distance) Sycamore Pumpkin 10K (1978) What was the first marathon you ever ran? What year did you run it? Did you have fun that day? I ran the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon in 2000. I was not ready for it! I fell apart at mile 15 and never recovered. I finished a poor 5:01 which was my PW until 2007 Chicago Marathon (say no more). How long have you been a runner and why did you start running? I became a casual runner after high school (1977) after playing team sports in high school. I needed something to keep my fitness level up. Why did you decide to become a Maniac? Or what inspired you? I saw the Maniac running shirts at a couple of races and I was intrigued. I look you guys up and decided that you fit into my lifestyle. Of all the races out there in this world, which one would you most like to run? Boston of course! I was close in 2008 but I’m still ½ an hour off of BQing. It’s something I may need to wait for my age to catch up with my running ability. Still…. If you could run a marathon / ultra accompanied by anyone either living or deceased, who would you choose and why? I grew up watching Pre so I would have to say him. I also am a Frank Shorter fan. I’m also a barefoot runner and a VFF (Vibram) runner, so I would love to pick the brain of Chris McDougall the author of “Born to Run.” What was you most memorable marathon and why? 2007 BofA Chicago Marathon. Watching things as a runner fall apart. It was a lesson in how not to manage a bad situation and then blame the quicker runners. If someone asked you to pick a race for him or her that they could run a PR at, which race would you suggest? Without a doubt, the Chicago Marathon. What was the furthest you’ve ever traveled for a race? Chicago to Orlando for the Disney Marathon (Goofy Race and a Half). Do any of your non-running friends or family members thing that you’re crazy for running as much as you do? What are some of their comments to you? My wife refuses to come out and support me at these races because she does not like to see me in pain or inflicting injury (particularly black toes) on myself. She does love the weight loss drop and my overall conditioning. Heart disease and diabetes run in my family so she is very glad that I have not developed problems. Whenever I speak of races, any races, her eyes roll back and she gets this look that says I’m nuts. If personal obligations or finances were not an issue, how many marathons would you run in one year? Well, seeing that I just ran another marathon with two weeks rest, I would run one a month and achieve the 50 state goal. From what race did you receive your favorite finishers medal? The Marine Corps Marathon Medal is very cool and the Disney ones (Goofy) are also cool. However, I would have to say the wooden one I got from the Great Western 30K is my favorite. Plus, it’s a race that no longer exists when it was changed to a ½ marathon. Where do you keep your finisher medals? I have a huge soccer team trophy that I received when my son’s travel soccer team won a tournament 10 years ago. Our travel organization does not have an area to display so they told me to keep it. I have it sitting in my office with all the medal piled up on it. Do you wear your race t-shirts? What do you do with the ones you don’t wear? I do wear the running type shirts for training. The cotton ones are donated to an organization that makes hats out of them for women going thru cancer treatment. They cannot use the running type shirts. If you could put on a marathon anywhere in the world, where would you have it? I would love to put on a spring marathon along the Chicago lakefront. It’s been tried several times but failed due to mismanagement. There is a demand for this type of race. Maniac Yellow, or Maniac Black? Maniac Black. What is your favorite pre race meal? Post race meal? Broiled or grilled salmon with rice for both. A pint of my favorite Sam Adams beer for post. What is your energy gel of choice? Sport drink of choice? Cliff shots – vanilla flavor. G2 – Love the low sugar. Which race would you never run again and why? The Hot Chocolate 15K or any race administrated by the RAM organization. It’s strictly a money making operation that will oversell the race to make a buck. What was the most challenging race or combination of races you’ve ever done and why? In the spring of 2009, I did the Wisconsin Marathon (I ran the ½) on Saturday and the Great Western ½ Marathon on Sunday. I was feeling it the last three miles of the Great Western. What is a typical training week like for you? How many miles do you run? Any cross training? I use the FIRST training methods in that I bike 10 miles every morning six days a week. I complete my runs during the evening except for Saturday and Sundays. On Saturdays, I complete my long runs with my running group and on Sundays if I am not racing, I will do a brick (bike 15 miles, run 10) workout. Do you have a training partner? If so, who is it? I train and race with a group out of Schaumburg, IL. We are known as Team Caffeine because we meet at a local coffee shop and often spend more time drinking coffee and catching up on each other life than we do running. We had 20 runners travel to DC for the Marine Corps Marathon along with our respective spouses. What kind of shoes do you train in? Do you race in a different shoe? I use Vibram Five Fingers (VFF) for training and some races. I also train in a Newton trainer and run in Asics racing flats. I believe most shoe companies are evil and are out to make a buck promoting a shoe that is not natural. What are your short-term running goals? I am looking at running my first ultra (50K) in the spring of 2010. Other than that, I will continue to run Chicago every year. What are your long-term running goals? Qualify for Boston. Nuf said! Assuming you have time, what do you do for fun other than run marathons? I try to spend as much time as I can with my wife and partner of 24 years. Who is your favorite Super Hero? Superman, Wonder Woman, Main Maniac (with cat on head), non Maniac Beauty? Love the Main Mania! Also as an owner of two cats it gives me ideas.
