Maniac # 2021

State you live in -Utah

How many marathons / ultra marathons have you run? 18 marathons

What was the first race you ever ran? (Any distance) a 5K run in college in 1984

What was the first marathon you ever ran? What year did you run it? Did you have fun that day?
My first marathon was the LaSalle Banks Chicago Marathon in 1997. I had started to run with a friend, running was sort of new to me at the point, I actually hated it. But we wanted to get in shape so on our first run we said, “I wonder how far a marathon is…” a bit of research and an entire summer of training and we finished the marathon together. She moved to another country and I wanted to keep running. So I joined team in training to make lots of friends and just kept running.  The training and marathon was “fun” so I kept it up.

How long have you been a runner and why did you start running? We had to run a stupid mile in middle school every Friday, I hated it. but sometime in college 1984 I took a PE class to help with that freshman 20, and it included running. I realized I actually loved the way it felt and continued with it as an easy way to keep in shape

Why did you decide to become a Maniac? Or what inspired you? Hmm well I had already done 15 marathons when I head about the maniacs. My friend Teresa Baker found the maniac group and prodded me along, since I had already done two marathons in 2 months. so she found another marathon that would allow myself, jim levy, angie pace and her huband bob and I all to qualify for the first level. Doesn’t take much to push me along!

Of all the races out there in this world, which one would you most like to run? hmmmm have not really considered much other than getting through all the states at least one time. But I think something in Italy or France could be quite nice.

If you could run a marathon / ultra accompanied by anyone either living or deceased, who would you choose and why? I am thinking maybe someone who talks a lot but has a lot of thought provoking things to say, to keep my mind going. But right now I don’t know who I would choose that would fit that category

What was you most memorable marathon and why? Anchorage, I saw moose along the course, and it was clear and I saw the tip of Denali while running. I also met my now husband in the training of it.

If someone asked you to pick a race for him or her that they could run a PR at, which race would you suggest? Chicago, flat and fast, usually cool weather. Or St. George, lots of downhill

What was the furthest you’ve ever traveled for a race? Hawaii

Do any of your non-running friends or family members thing that you’re crazy for running as much as you do? What are some of their comments to you? absolutely. I usually just hear, “you are crazy” and “ I don’t know how you do it” “aren’t you afraid your knees will give out one day”

If personal obligations or finances were not an issue, how many marathons would you run in one year? 6-8 I imagine. But it cold be more.

From what race did you receive your favorite finishers medal? Goofy Challenge, 3-in-1 they are big and pretty cool

Where do you keep your finisher medals? I have nails in the wall next to the treadmill and they are all hanging on the wall

Do you wear your race t-shirts? What do you do with the ones you don’t wear? Yes I do. lately I have started to wear the cotton ones again. I have all these great tech tee’s now from races and I wear those for training. The ones I don’t wear sit in a closet untouched. But I can’t bear to get rid of them

If you could put on a marathon anywhere in the world, where would you have it? not sure

Maniac Yellow, or Maniac Black? Yellow

What is your favorite pre race meal? Post race meal? I liked my most recent prerace meal when we were in mesquite. I had BREAKFAST. I had pancakes and scrambled eggs and bacon. It was great. Usually I eat pasta with sautéed veggies

What is your energy gel of choice? Sport drink of choice? Accelegel is what I had been using.

Which race would you never run again and why? Rock n Roll San Diego. Only because I ran the inaugural in ’98 and they ran out of water! I know they have gotten past all that now, but it sticks with me.

What was the most challenging race or combination of races you’ve ever done and why? The goofy challenge probably. Craziness it seems to run that much in one weekend. But the other would be the my marathons that were part of my Ironman Canada races. Just because it is such a challenge to run 26.2 after having swam 2 miles and then biking 112

What is a typical training week like for you? How many miles do you run? Any cross training? I run not enough for the marathons that I run. I have small kids and don’t like to get up early and I live someplace with bad air. I try to run 2 x during the week and long on the weekend. I try to run 10-12 miles during the week. I cycle, kickbox and weight lift.

Do you have a training partner? If so, who is it? I have an entire group of training partners. I run with the Galloway group in SLC (maniacs, teresa, angie, jim, bob, franz) and also my own group of lady running friends dubbed the Crazy Marathon Maidens.

What kind of shoes do you train in? Do you race in a different shoe? I run in Nike’s, and the model keeps changing because they keep messing with my shoes! I run in what I train in. don’t’ consider myself fast enough for it to matter about switching to fancy lightweight running shoes.

What are your short-term running goals? I seem to only plan a year out at a time. So for 2010 – Austin, Tacoma, Missoula, Caspar, Portland and Maybe Tucson. The Ragnar Wasatch Back Relay

What are your long-term running goals? To just be able to keep running, to complete all 50 states at some point

Assuming you have time, what do you do for fun other than run marathons? I knit a lot, I play with me kids, I like to hike and snowshoe. I love to garden

Who is your favorite Super Hero? Superman, Wonder Woman, Main Maniac (with cat on head), non Maniac Beauty? Wonder Women, man she rocked
