How many marathons / ultra marathons have you run? I have run 5 marathons

What was the first race you ever ran? (Any distance) My first race was a 5k.  Plainfield Harvest Run.  Hooked on races ever since.

What was the first marathon you ever ran? What year did you run it? Did you have fun that day?  My first marathon was the Chicago Marathon in 2009.  I had a blast and the conditions were perfect for a first marathon.  However, as I crossed the finish line I thought I would be overwhelmed with emotions with finishing my first marathon and was instead very disappointed when I didn’t feel anything.  It wasn’t until three hours after the race when it finally hit me that I finished a marathon and ran 26.2 miles.

How long have you been a runner and why did you start running?  I have not been a runner long.  I had wanted to run for many years and would even have dreams about running.  I started running a few local 5k’s in 2008 but did not get serious until I signed up for a 10k training program in the spring of 2009 and followed that up with a marathon training program with the Chicago Area Runners Association.

Why did you decide to become a Maniac? Or what inspired you?   It was during the 10k training program when I noticed the singlet our leader was wearing.  After he told us all about the Maniacs and the history behind it, I was hooked on joining the group.

Of all the races out there in this world, which one would you most like to run?  Currently on top of my list is Comrades.

If you could run a marathon / ultra accompanied by anyone either living or deceased, who would you choose and why?….  Any of the great people that I have met through the Chicago Area Runners Association.

What was you most memorable marathon and why? My most memorable race is the 2009 Chicago Marathon.  It was my first marathon.  Just a little more than a year before I was weighing in at 300 pounds, sitting on the couch.  At the start of the Chicago Marathon, I had lost 115 pounds.

If someone asked you to pick a race for him or her that they could run a PR at, which race would you suggest?  Of the races that I have participated in, it would be the Chicago Marathon.

What was the furthest you’ve ever traveled for a race? Chicago to Los Angeles.  2000 miles.

Do any of your non-running friends or family members think that you’re crazy for running as much as you do? What are some of their comments to you?… Most are very surprised.  Always fun to see someone I have not seen in a couple of years and the look on their face when I tell them that I run marathons.

If personal obligations or finances were not an issue, how many marathons would you run in one year?… I would love to run two marathons per month.

>From what race did you receive your favorite finishers medal?… Wisconsin Marathoon.  Medal shaped like a block of cheese.

Where do you keep your finisher medals?  As of right now, they are stored in a china cabinet until I find a place to display them in the house.

Do you wear your race t-shirts? What do you do with the ones you don’t wear? I wear all of them proudly!

If you could put on a marathon anywhere in the world, where would you have it? Banff, Alberta Canada.

Maniac Yellow, or Maniac Black? Yellow Maniac

What is your favorite pre race meal? Post race meal? Night before, Spaghetti.  Morning of the race, oatmeal and banana nut oatmeal cookies.  Post race, I usually stop in a a local mexican restaurant and pick up a carne asada burrito and three tacos al pastor.  For dessert, Ben & Jerry’s.

What is your energy gel of choice? Sport drink of choice? Chocolate GU & Orange Accelerade.

Which race would you never run again and why? On the bottom of my list is the Wisconsin Marathon.  Poor road conditions and aid stations without water and gatorade.

What was the most challenging race or combination of races you’ve ever done and why? My most challenging marathon was the Los Angeles Marathon.  I was not prepared for the hills, tibial tendonitis during training and the doctor recommended that I stop training on hills.  Injured hip around mile 16 and suffered the last 10 miles.
