How many marathons / ultra marathons have you run? 70

What was the first race you ever ran? (Any distance):  The 1982 Redondo Beach Super Bowl Sunday 10K.  This is when I became a “runner”.  Like George Sheehan said the difference between a runner and a jogger is the entry form.  The runners group I was running with, The “Legg Lake Runners” said, “Big deal, now you have to run a marathon!”  It was on!

What was the first marathon you ever ran? What year did you run it? Did you have fun that day? The Palos Verdes Marathon, in 1982.  It was (is)  a tough hilly course along the ocean, beautiful, tough, but had a lot of fun(?). Like all firsts, I was hooked!

How long have you been a runner and why did you start running?  I started running in 1981 to get back in shape.

Why did you decide to become a Maniac? Or what inspired you?  I saw a some Maniacs at the 2007 Super Bowl Sunday Huntington Beach Marathon, looked at the website that night,  said “that’s me!” and committed myself.

Of all the races out there in this world, which one would you most like to run?  Pamplona, Spain, Run with the Bulls, and of course, BOSTON!

If you could run a marathon / ultra accompanied by anyone either living or deceased, who would you choose and why? Jim Fixx, the original, he is the man.  We would ask  Dr. George Sheehan to run with us.

What was you most memorable marathon and why? Aside from my first, Palos Verdes, it would have to be the Marine Corp Marathon.  I’m patriotic, taking in all the history and monuments to me was overwhelming.

If someone asked you to pick a race for him or her that they could run a PR at, which race would you suggest?  If you can run downhill, St. George, otherwise The Long Beach Marathon in Long Beach, Ca., a flat, fast course.

What was the furthest you’ve ever traveled for a race? 2700 miles to Washington DC for the Marine Corps Marathon.

Do any of your non-running friends or family members thing that you’re crazy for running as much as you do? What are some of their comments to you? Yup.  “You know Jim Fixx died of a heart attack”  “You’ll get arthritis” “Running in smog is worse than not running”  “I can’t even drive 26 miles!” “How long was that marathon?”  “You’re going to to run again? You ran yesterday”  ‘Pendejo!” “You’re crazy!” ( I  know)

If personal obligations or finances were not an issue, how many marathons would you run in one year? 52

From what race did you receive your favorite finishers medal? Marine Corps Marathon
Where do you keep your finisher medals? I think they’re in a box somewhere.

Do you wear your race t-shirts? What do you do with the ones you don’t wear? Yes, I wear them all, they are badges of honor.  I wear them until they fade away, start tearing.

If you could put on a marathon anywhere in the world, where would you have it? Rancho Cucamonga, Ca.

What is a typical training week like for you? How many miles do you run? Any cross training? I run about 30-50 miles a week.  50 miles is high when I don’t have marathons to run.  I cross train a little with light  weights.  When I run marathons on consecutive weeks, I don’t run during the week, just the gym for a little cross training.

Do you have a training partner? If so, who is it? No, I usually run alone. Sometimes on weekends I run with the Loma Linda Lopers.
