Name:  Scott Hill

Maniac #839

State you live in Kansas

How many marathons / ultra marathons have you run? 15 Marathons/8 Ultras

What was the first race you ever ran? (Any distance)  Race for the Cure 5k 2001 (First as an adult)

What was the first marathon you ever ran? What year did you run it? Did you have fun that day?  Wichita Marathon, 2004. Awesome day.  Awesome memory.

How long have you been a runner and why did you start running?  Since 2001.  Started running because my older brother started running half-marathons and was considering a marathon.

Why did you decide to become a Maniac? Or what inspired you?  I ran the Gobbler Grind Marathon in Overland Park, Kansas in 2005.  This was my second marathon.  I ran behind a guy who had run 13 marathons that fall.  He had done one the week before and was planning on one the following weekend.  I was amazed that anyone could do this, especially this guy (no offence intended).

Of all the races out there in this world, which one would you most like to run?  Leadville 100.

If you could run a marathon / ultra accompanied by anyone either living or deceased, who would you choose and why?  My wife (she is sitting next to me…)

What was you most memorable marathon and why?  Heartland 100 (I know you said marathon, but…).  My wife and brother crewed for me.  My parents stayed out all night and waited for me and cheered me on at each stop.  My brother and wife each ran 15-20 miles with me.  Just a great family experience.

If someone asked you to pick a race for him or her that they could run a PR at, which race would you suggest?  I’d pick a tough, hilly race that there was no chance at PRing.  I’d hope they would learn the fun of running slow.

What was the furthest you’ve ever traveled for a race?  Drove 9 hours each way to the Austin Marathon this year.  Left after work on Friday and made it to work by 8 am on Monday.

Do any of your non-running friends or family members thing that you’re crazy for running as much as you do? What are some of their comments to you?  My mother tells me that no one should ever run that far (a marathon).  So I ran a 50k. “No one should ever run that far.”  So I ran a 50 miler.  “No one should ever run that far.” So I ran 100 miles.  She cried.  That seems like a good excuse not to run more than 100 miles :)

If personal obligations or finances were not an issue, how many marathons would you run in one year? 52

From what race did you receive your favorite finishers medal? Little Rock

Where do you keep your finisher medals?  Hanging from a lamp.  I look forward to breaking the lamp with the weight of too many medals.

Do you wear your race t-shirts? What do you do with the ones you don’t wear?  Tech shirts, yes.  Others, sometimes.  Usually they turn into throw away shirts for the next race.  Donate many to charity.

If you could put on a marathon anywhere in the world, where would you have it?  Starting at my house, ending at my house.

Maniac Yellow, or Maniac Black?  Yellow.

What is your favorite pre race meal? Post race meal?  Bagel.  Beer.

What is your energy gel of choice? Sport drink of choice?  Gu, various flavors.  Accelerade.

Which race would you never run again and why?  Don’t have one.

What was the most challenging race or combination of races you’ve ever done and why?  Heartland 100 miler.  Guess why?

What is a typical training week like for you? How many miles do you run? Any cross training?   I run at least 4 miles every day (working on a streak; currently at 18+ months).  Trying this year to do a run of at least 26.2 miles each calendar week for the year.  So those combined make for a 50-60 mile week each week.  Trying to train for a half-ironman too (would be my first), so I am doing some biking and swimming (not enough of either).

Do you have a training partner? If so, who is it?  Several, including my wife.

What kind of shoes do you train in? Do you race in a different shoe?  Adidas Supernova Cushion.  Depending on the race, sometimes I try racing flats, sometimes use trail shoes, sometimes trainers.

What are your short-term running goals?  12 marathons this year (official); 52 marathons this year (official or unofficial).

What are your long-term running goals? 50 State club.  Leadville 100.

Assuming you have time, what do you do for fun other than run marathons?  Enjoy yard work, reading on occasions…

Who is your favorite Super Hero? Superman, Wonder Woman, Main Maniac (with cat on head)
Superman.
