I was not a regular runner back then. It was 90 degrees and I tanked. What was the first marathon you ever ran? What year did you run it? Did you have fun that day? The Vermont City Marathon, 2000. It is an excellent event for a first timer. I had a great time and made all my goals. How long have you been a runner and why did you start running? Since 1999. Several of my male ancestors had heart disease and I refuse to accept that fate. Why did you decide to become a Maniac? Or what inspired you? I only recently heard about this club and realized I had already qualified at the bronze level (3 in 3 months, twice). And I think the singlet is cool. Of all the races out there in this world, which one would you most like to run? Comrades Marathon, South Africa. If you could run a marathon / ultra accompanied by anyone either living or deceased, who would you choose and why? Dick Beardsley. I recently read "Duel In The Sun." He seems like a fascinating person. What was your most memorable marathon and why? If someone asked you to pick a race for him or her that they could run a PR at, which race would you suggest? The Mohawk Hudson River Marathon, Schenectady to Albany, N.Y. 450' net downhill, with What was the furthest you’ve ever traveled for a race? Do any of your non-running friends or family members think that you’re crazy for running as much as you do? If personal obligations or finances were not an issue, how many marathons would you run in one year? One every month. >From what race did you receive your favorite finishers Where do you keep your finisher medals? Until recently they were hanging on a tie rack in my closet. Do you wear your race t-shirts? What do you do with the ones you don’t wear? Yes. I collected too many of them and recently donated several to www.backonmyfeet.org. I don't think they're accepting any more clothing donations though, so just send money. If you could put on a marathon anywhere in the world, where would you have it? In my town, Underhill Center, Vt. It's very scenic and hilly and I'd love to share it with everybody. Maniac Yellow, or Maniac Black? Yellow. It matches my Mizuno's. What is your favorite pre race meal? Waffles with What is your energy gel of choice? Vanilla Gu. Sport drink of choice? Gatorade Endurance. Which race would you never run again and why? What was the most challenging race or combination of races you’ve ever done and why? I haven't run any closer together than three weeks apart, but doing Boston and Vermont City Marathon five weeks apart is a challenge. That's because I have to train through the Vermont winter, then the Boston course beats me up and then I try to add speed work to peak for a good showing at Vermont, my local race. What is a typical training week like for you? How many miles do you run? Any cross training? I try to run 35 – 40 MPW for maintenance and 50 – 55 MPW to prepare for a goal marathon. I usually cut way back on miles from Thanksgiving to New year's Day. Do you have a training partner? If so, who is it? No. What kind of shoes do you train in? Do you race in a different shoe? I train in Mizuno Elixir's, Mizuno Inspire's and for cold weather, Adidas Response Trail Winter's. I race in the Mizuno Elixir's. What are your short-term running goals? Run the Bataan Death March and Boston Marathons as training runs for a sub 3:30 at VCM. What are your long-term running goals? Break 3:25 at the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon in October. Assuming you have time, what do you do for fun other than run marathons? Run shorter races. Barbecue and sit back on my deck and enjoy the view. Who is your favorite Super Hero?
