Maniac questionnaire

Name Adam Shank

Maniac #967

State you live in Minnesota (“yah, you betcha’”)

How many marathons / ultra marathons have you run? 6 marathons, no ultras

What was the first race you ever ran? (Any distance) I think it was the Rock and Race 5K for colon cancer back in DC

What was the first marathon you ever ran? What year did you run it? Did you have fun that day? Twin Cities, 2006.  I had a great time, aside from the last 7 miles of pain… all worth it in the end though.

How long have you been a runner and why did you start running?  Since high school, just picked it up again a couple years ago.  Started running to be involved with sports of some kind in high school.

Why did you decide to become a Maniac? Or what inspired you?  I figured my friends all think I’m nuts already- now it can be official.

Of all the races out there in this world, which one would you most like to run? Well Boston, of course!  But that won’t happen with my pace.

If you could run a marathon / ultra accompanied by anyone either living or deceased, who would you choose and why?  My brother- I want to see if I could kick his butt!

What was you most memorable marathon and why?  Twin Cities- nothing beats that feeling of crossing the finish line the very first time- definitely will always stand out in my mind.

If someone asked you to pick a race for him or her that they could run a PR at, which race would you suggest? Chicago if it’s not 88 degrees!

What was the furthest you’ve ever traveled for a race?  Huntsville, Alabama.  Soon to be Seattle.

Do any of your non-running friends or family members thing that you’re crazy for running as much as you do? What are some of their comments to you?  See above- glad I am officially a maniac now.  They usually think I’m an idiot because of insufficient training/odd training (hey, I have a ritual, I swear…)

If personal obligations or finances were not an issue, how many marathons would you run in one year?  I liked doing one 3 weeks after another.  So 12 or more would be great!

From what race did you receive your favorite finishers medal?  Ooh, there have been a couple good ones.  Twin Cities was cool, it spins.  Hey, I’m easily amused.

Where do you keep your finisher medals?  They’re hanging over my bed, Little Rock is separated because I’m sure it will break the curtain rod the others hang from.

Do you wear your race t-shirts? What do you do with the ones you don’t wear?  Yes, all of the tech shirts I wear.  I think I wear pretty much all of them.

If you could put on a marathon anywhere in the world, where would you have it?  Mystic Seaport, Connecticut- such a beautiful area.

Maniac Yellow, or Maniac Black?  Maniac Black

What is your favorite pre race meal? Post race meal?  Pre race meal- going out to eat at a local pasta place to gorge on pasta and chicken of some sort.  Post race meal- anything that’s not good for me- I feel like I’ve earned the right to eat awful food at that point.

What is your energy gel of choice? Sport drink of choice?  Energy gel- the GU shots are pretty good.  Sport drink- Propel fitness water, berry flavor

Which race would you never run again and why?  Chicago- I ran the year it was hot, and it was very poorly organized.  First impressions mean a lot sometimes.

What was the most challenging race or combination of races you’ve ever done and why?  Well, races in general- the Get in Gear this year was tough.  I’m thankful it was only a 10K- it was blizzard conditions at the end of April here in MN!

What is a typical training week like for you? How many miles do you run? Any cross training? Here’s where I hope my friends aren’t able to read this- a typical training week doesn’t involve as much training as it should. I’m spotty in my training efforts, partly because of school and work being so nutty.  I cross train by biking (long distance cyclist as well)

Do you have a training partner? If so, who is it?  I try to run with friends when I can- Marco, Benjamin, Andy, Kate, Paul, Mariam.  Not all at once.  That would be a riot though.

What kind of shoes do you train in? Do you race in a different shoe?  Usually train and race in the same shoe.  I LOVE my Nike AirStructure Triax.  So much that I had to buy a the same pair in a different color after my old ones took me through 4 marathons.  No shoes should ever take a person through that many races.  That’s when I knew they would be the shoe of choice.

What are your short-term running goals?  Finish Seafair Marathon alive and under 6 hours.

What are your long-term running goals?  Possibly add 2 or 3 more races to the list by the end of ’08.  Get into the 50-state club next year, even though it’s highly unlikely that I’ll do all 50.  But who knows.

Assuming you have time, what do you do for fun other than run marathons?  Free time? What’s that?  I like cycling, going out to eat, travel, partying with friends.

Who is your favorite Super Hero? Superman, Wonder Woman, Main Maniac (with cat on head)  I sure wouldn’t want to mess with Main Maniac.  That cat looks like a pretty rough kitty.
