How many marathons / ultra marathons have you run? At this point 10 marathons; No Ultras’ (one planned for next year, though).
What was the first race you ever ran? (Any distance) High School track, 2 mile run, got lapped by the finishers, (What would they think now?)
What was the first marathon you ever ran? What year did you run it? Did you have fun that day? Maine Marathon, 2003, (Portland, ME) I had a BLAST, couldn’t believe that it could be that much fun.
How long have you been a runner and why did you start running? Ran in high school, then got out of it; I began running again when I was 45 to get into better shape.
Why did you decide to become a Maniac? Or what inspired you? Met Bob/Lenore Dolphin while doing the inaugural “Goofy Challenge” in Disney; they learned that I qualified for Maniac status from an earlier 2 marathons in 2 weeks stint and encouragement to “join up”.
Of all the races out there in this world, which one would you most like to run? After talking to several Maniacs/50 State folks who’ve “been there, done that” I’d love to travel to China to do “The Great Wall” marathon.
If you could run a marathon / ultra accompanied by anyone either living or deceased, who would you choose and why? Joan Benoit Samuelson, she’s a Mainer.
What was you most memorable marathon and why? MDI Marathon (Bar Harbor, ME), 2005. It was the marathon that qualified me for Maniac status. It became a “Death March” for me due to the wind, rain and cold. Finished in just under 6:30 with hypothermia. Thought about quitting the last 13 miles but somehow “stuck it out”
If someone asked you to pick a race for him or her that they could run a PR at, which race would you suggest? “Go ask someone else…. ;-) “
What was the furthest you’ve ever traveled for a race? To Disney for the “Goofy”
Do any of your non-running friends or family member’s thing that you’re crazy for running as much as you do? What are some of their comments to you? A majority of them think that I am, but there are several others that realize the importance runner has for me. I’m a Mental Health clinician, so I know I’m not crazy!
If personal obligations or finances were not an issue, how many marathons would you run in one year? As many as my wife/family would let me.
From what race did you receive your favorite finisher’s medal? Had to be Disney/Goofy
Where do you keep your finisher medals? On a “Plant hanger” next to my bedroom closet.
Do you wear your race t-shirts? What do you do with the ones you don’t wear? I occasionally wear the shirts to “remember” but they usually collect dust in the closet
If you could put on a marathon anywhere in the world, where would you have it? Too many choices.
Maniac Yellow, or Maniac Black? The “new” combo yellow/black
What is your favorite pre race meal? Post race meal? Pasta (pre), Pizza (post)
What is your energy gel of choice? Sport drink of choice? Clif shots; Accelerade
Which race would you never run again and why? Don’t have one YET
What was the most challenging race or combination of races you’ve ever done and why? My recent double in RI/CONN just because it was a “double” and my first.
What is a typical training week like for you? How many miles do you run? Any cross training? Depends upon how many marathons I’ve done recently…never more than 35-40 miles training in a week. Spend time in the Gym, stacking wood, out x-c skiing or snowshoeing.

What kind of shoes do you train in? Do you race in a different shoe? New Balance 754
What are your short-term running goals? Keep running, one foot in front of the other.
What are your long-term running goals? Keep running, one foot in front of the other.
