What was the first marathon you ever ran? What year did you run it? Did you have fun that day? Mercedes Marathon 2006 – It was a great day.

 

How long have you been a runner and why did you start running?

I started back running in July of 2005 at the age of 51. I run in the 60’s as a teenager, high school track and cross country, and played other sports. I started back running to get control of my body. I hit the scales at 300 pounds in 2005.

 

Why did you decide to become a Maniac? Or what inspired you?

 To see how far I can push my body. My running friend Maniac #454.

 

Of all the races out there in this world, which one would you most like to run

Boston, but it will never happen.

 

If you could run a marathon / ultra accompanied by anyone either living or deceased, who would you choose and why?

I have a son who is 28 and a grandson who is 5 months old, I would love to be able to run a marathon with both of them. As of today my son and I have run one marathon together.

 

What was you most memorable marathon and why?

Chicago 2006, all the runners and the crowd support.

 

If someone asked you to pick a race for him or her that they could run a PR at, which race would you suggest?

Rocket City Marathon, a flat run.

 

What was the furthest you’ve ever traveled for a race?

Birmingham to Chicago

 

Do any of your non-running friends or family members thing that you’re crazy for running as much as you do? What are some of their comments to you?

You bet, friends say I’m to old, going to get hurt. Ask if I lost my mind and what do you get out of it?

 

 

If personal obligations or finances were not an issue, how many marathons would you run in one year?

For sure 12, then fill in the gaps.

 

From what race did you receive your favorite finishers medal?

First Light Marathon, it was hand made by the people putting the marathon on.

 

Where do you keep your finisher medals?

I’m going to put together a book of medals and etc..

 

 Do you wear your race t-shirts? What do you do with the ones you don’t wear?

Yes, running clothes is all I wear most of the time.

 

If you could put on a marathon anywhere in the world, where would you have it?

Any place flat, not to hot or to cold and I would have a great post race party.

Which race would you never run again and why?

I don’t have one.

 

What was the most challenging race or combination of races you’ve ever done and why?

County Music Marathon 2006, bad head winds also got small rocks in my shoes around mile 18 and did not stop to get them out at first. It’s hard to think that something that small can cause so much pain. I guess it’s a male thing.

 

What is a typical training week like for you? How many miles do you run? Any cross training?

Running with my couch potato group that I joined July 2005. I run 30+ miles a week. It’s not really a cross training, but I play ball with a traveling team. Upper body work with weights.

 

Do you have a training partner? If so, who is it?

I have many training partners to many names to list. But I do have Maniac #454.

 

What kind of shoes do you train in? Do you race in a different shoe?

I train and run in N.B.

 

What are your short-term running goals?

To keep my feet under me.

 

What are your long-term running goals?

To finish all marathons I enter.

 

Assuming you have time, what do you do for fun other than run marathons?

Play ball and play with my grand children . Maimie and John David III

 

Who is your favorite Super Hero? Superman, Wonder Woman, Main Maniac (with cat on head)

All the people that I train with. There is one that stands out and his name is Danny Haralson.
