How many marathons / ultra marathons have you run? 19 marathons, 52 ultras
What was the first race you ever ran? (Any distance) St Patrick’s Day Dash ’94(?)
What was the first marathon
you ever ran? What year did you run it? Did you have fun that day? Seattle Marathon 1995, I had fun during the race, but could barely
go up
or down stairs that
evening or the next several days.
How long have you been a runner and why did you start running?
Since 1993. To get in shape for scrambling and climbing.
Why did you decide to become a Maniac? Or what inspired you? I could.
Of all the races out there in this world, which one would you most like to run? Hardrock 100
If you could run a marathon / ultra accompanied by anyone either living or deceased, who would you choose and why?
My Grandfather, just to have an opportunity to talk with him one more time.
What was you most memorable
marathon and why? I would have to list two:
2004 Cascade Crest
100 time = 21:10– I finished second overall, under the
previous course record
and my family actually came to the race (although
they missed my finishing,
arriving after I had already crossed the finish line.)
The other most memorable
run would be 2005 Western States 100 (20:08).
I took over an hour off my
previous best time for 100 miles and finished
27th overall in a
very competitive race. Reaching the
Green Gate aid station
while it was still day-light
was incredible for me.
If someone asked you to pick a race for him or her that they could run a PR at, which race would you suggest?
I focus on trail runs and
they are each different – each course has its own PR time.
What was the furthest you’ve ever traveled for a race? Lake Tahoe
Do any of your non-running friends or family members thing that you’re crazy for running as much as you do? What are some of their comments to you?
Of course. “100 miles, I don’t even like to drive that far”
If personal obligations or finances were not an issue, how many marathons would you run in one year? Don’t know because it has never been an option to consider.
From what race did you receive your favorite finishers medal?
Western States Silver Buckle
Where do you keep your finisher medals?
Hanging on the wall in my office with the race number
Do you wear your race t-shirts? What do you do with the ones you don’t wear?
I wear most of them, especially the tech fabric shirts. Donate them to Goodwill.
If you could put on a marathon anywhere in the world, where would you have it?
Have given this absolutely no thought.

What is your favorite pre race meal? Post race meal?
Re-race -
Pasta primavera with chicken and a very rich cream sauce.
Post Race – Greasy
cheeseburgers and salty French fries with a chocolate shake.
What is your energy gel of choice? Sport drink of choice? Hammergel, Mocha Fraps
Which race would you never run again and why? NA
What was the most challenging race or combination of races you’ve ever done and why?
Western
States 2000 – First 100 miler, HUGE learning curve, heels turned
to hamburger by
30 miles, but I still finished!
What is a typical training
week like for you? How many miles do you run? Any cross training? I average 30-35 miles per week over the course of a year.
This varies from 0 to 70
miles, not counting 100 mile races.
I do some biking and
spinning classes and very limited weight lifting.
Do you have a training partner? If so, who is it?
When
seriously training, I try to get to Tiger Mt. and run with Jim Kerby,
Mark Hartinger,
Jamie Gifford, or Tony C. They all keep
me honest except
for Kerby, who tries to
kill the rest of us mere mortals.
What kind of shoes do you train in? Do you race in a different shoe?
Road – Nike Air
Structure Triax
Trail – Montrail - used
to be Leona Divides (now discontinued)

What are your short-term running goals? Get back into shape.
What are your long-term running goals?
Be running
and enjoying it in my 70’s and 80’s
Hope to run the Grand Slam
when I turn 50 (Western States, Vermont,
Leadville, and Wasatch
Front 100 mile runs in the same summer)
Assuming you have time, what do you do for fun other than run marathons?
Hiking,
climbing, biking, cheering my kids at their sporting events.
