How many marathons / ultra marathons have you run? 9 marathons, 1 ultra
What was the first race you ever ran? (Any distance) 50 yard dash, about 5th grade.
What was the first marathon you ever ran? What year did you run it? Did you have fun that day? The North Olympic discovery marathon. 2003. I entered it slightly hurt, and just wanted to finish. At mile 17, I felt great, and carried that feeling to the end. Loved it.
How long have you been a runner and why did you start running? As a kid, I ran all over Tiger Mountain. Then in 2003, I ran half a mile with my kids, and remembered how much I enjoyed running, and realized how bad of shape I was in. Why did you decide to become a Maniac? Or what inspired you? Peer pressure. Dick, Mary, Cliff, Van, Phil, and others.
Of all the races out there in this world, which one would you most like to run? The original marathon course in Greece. The 100 meters in the Olympics.
If you could run a marathon / ultra accompanied by anyone either living or deceased, who would you choose and why? My dad. He stopped running after 20 years, before I really started, and I only ran with him once. He’s now going on 70, and still in pretty good shape. I would love that.
What was you most memorable marathon and why? Boston 2006. Rock star status for 26.2 miles. If someone asked you to pick a race for him or her that they could run a PR at, which race would you suggest? Rock and Roll Phoenix
What was the furthest you’ve ever traveled for a race? Boston
Do any of your non-running friends or family members thing that you’re crazy for running as much as you do? What are some of their comments to you? Most of them know I’m a little out there anyway, just some eye rolls sometimes.
If personal obligations or finances were not an issue, how many marathons would you run in one year? 5 or 6
From what race did you receive your favorite finishers medal? Pigtails Flat Ass 50k. Van handmade it, and I’ll always treasure it and the memories.
Where do you keep your finisher medals? A couple are displayed, but most are in a basket waiting for something.
Do you wear your race t-shirts? What do you do with the ones you don’t wear?
I run in the tech ones, and wear the others to work after a while.
If you could put on a marathon anywhere in the world, where would you have it?
Why, Maple Valley, of course.
Maniac Yellow, or Maniac Black? Black for now. All my other singlets are bright targets.
What is your favorite pre race meal? Post race meal? Banana, triple espresso, Clif bar.
What is your energy gel of choice? Sport drink of choice? GU. Accelerade.
Which race would you never run again and why? None for now.
What was the most challenging race or combination of races you’ve ever done and why?
My first marathon. It was a head trip. Almost pulled out.
What is a typical training week like for you? How many miles do you run? Any cross training? Tues, track. Long run on Sat. Tempo/hill work on Thu. A couple easy runs in between. 30 to 70 miles, depending on my goal.
Do you have a training partner? If so, who is it? Many, but Dick Decker puts up with me the most.
What kind of shoes do you train in? Do you race in a different shoe? Brooks Glycerine, and adrenalines are my go to shoes
What are your short-term running goals? Faster 5 and 10 ks, more ultras.
What are your long-term running goals? To keep improving is #1, I’d like to do more destination marathons.
Assuming you have time, what do you do for fun other than run marathons?
Read a lot, lift weights, steelhead/salmon fish, and a lot of kid sports. Some skiing and biking.
Who is your favorite Super Hero? Superman, Wonder Woman, Main Maniac (with cat on head)
