State you live in
How many marathons / ultra marathons have you run?
27 and 4
What was the first race you ever ran? (Any distance)
Gulf Coast Classic 10k April 2000
What was the first marathon you ever ran? What year did you run it? Did you have fun that day?
Indianapolis Marathon/2001/yes and no: I cried the last mile because I wanted to qualify and did not make it while at the same time I should have just been satisfied with completing my first marathon.
How long have you been a runner and why did you start running?
I started running in 1995 (on a treadmill in a gym) to
lose weight.
Why did you decide to become a Maniac? Or what inspired you?
At my last marathon, there were some maniacs who told me
all about it. Then I knew it was where
I wanted to be… a place to belong!
Of all the races out there in this world, which one would you most like to run?
Badwater, when I am up to that level.
If you could run a marathon / ultra accompanied by anyone either living or deceased, who would you choose and why?
Michael Lager, because he is the one who introduced me to marathons, ultras, and races in general. Before him, I was just running on the treadmill. He taught me everything and for that I will always be grateful.
What was you most memorable marathon and why?
Tough question… Atlantic City because I had a police
escort? Maybe National because I ran
with my father, maybe one I ran with my son, or brother? The one I won? The hardest one I ever completed (Bel Monte)? Too hard to
answer! They are all memorable.
If someone asked you to pick a race for him or her that they could run a PR at, which race would you suggest?
Atlantic City, Myrtle Beach, or Las Vegas… all flat (but wind unpredictable). I hear Tucson is a PR course, but I haven’t done that one yet so I don’t know for sure.
What was the furthest you’ve ever traveled for a race?
Do any of your non-running friends or family members think that you’re crazy for running as much as you do? What are some of their comments to you?
Yes… “You are going to run myself into the ground” and
“You are using up all of your heartbeats” and “You are putting yourself at
increased risk for a stress fracture” (the last one is from my triathlete
doctor)!
If personal obligations or finances were not an issue, how many marathons would you run in one year?
From what race did you receive your favorite finishers medal?
No favorite.
Where do you keep your finisher medals?
On a tie rack… at least I think it’s a tie rack.
Do you wear your race t-shirts? What do you do with the ones you don’t wear?
I only wear some of them, my favorite fitting ones… the
rest stay on a shelf in my closet. (all
the lesser distances get made into blankets!)
If you could put on a marathon anywhere in the world, where would you have it?
I don’t know!
Maniac Yellow, or Maniac Black?
Maniac Yellow for now.
What is your favorite pre race meal? Post race meal?
Plain bagel with peanut butter or cream cheese and
coffee.
What is your energy gel of choice? Sport drink of choice?
Power Gel, 2x caffeine Tangerine! And Gatorade (green or purple).
Which race would you never run again and why?
I would run any of them again.
What was the most challenging race or combination of races you’ve ever done and why?
The Bel Monte Endurance Run. The terrain was unreal! I could not believe it was an actual racecourse and that people completed it. It was so strange, rough, rocky, and steep, that as I made my way, I wondered how people ever got through it!?!
What is a typical training week like for you? How many miles do you run? Any cross training?
I run about 1-2x a week, cycle about 1-2x a week, and
swim 2x a week. Then I do some kind of
race pretty much every weekend. 5k,
10k, half, full, ultra, and now tri’s too.
Do you have a training partner? If so, who is it?
My son was my running and marathon partner during his teenage years, but now he is off in the US Army! I really, really, really miss running with him.
What kind of shoes do you train in? Do you race in a different shoe?
Usually Asics. And no, I race in the same shoes I train
in.
What are your short-term running goals?
To finish the two 50milers I am registered for, and then do the Hellgate 100k in Dec.
What are your long-term running goals?
To do a few 100 milers (AT100 and Western States) and then to run one of those staged multi-day events, and then, my ultimate running goal is to run Badwater.
Assuming you have time, what do you do for fun other than run marathons?
Triathlons! I
just started this year. It is my primary focus right now… my goal is to
complete a half-iron distance this Fall, then a full Ironman next year.
Who
is your favorite Super Hero? Superman, Wonder Woman, Main Maniac (with cat on
head)?
Main
Maniac… because he is the only one who is REAL!
