January Highlights

1 new member for the month of January

Personal bests times set by Maniacs Steve Supkoff (Houston Marathon) and Rick Korecki (Lost Dutchman Marathon)

Thank you all for all the "traffic" on the Maniac Bulletin Board. We think it’s a useful and effective way for Maniacs

communicate with each other.

Upcoming Marathon News

The second annual Invest in Youth Fund Run will be held on February 26, 2005. The contact person for the race is Maniac Kendall Kreft. This is a fundraiser for the local YMCA and consists of a 12 hour run on a high school track. The run is in Lake Stevens, Wa, which is north and a bit east of Seattle. Additional information: there will be limited aid, no T-shirts and questionable lap counting. All proceeds will go to the Snohomish County YMCA Invest in Youth Program. Last year it was a beautiful sunny, crisp day with great views of the snow-covered Cascades. The run will be held rain or shine. Those participating will have fun - no whining allowed. Feel free to run any distance or time up to 12 hours, though the race starts at 7:00 AM and concludes at 7:00 PM. Should you participate and want to add this to your count in the Insane Asylum, well, at least you know at least how far you have to run. Contact Kendall at krkreft@aol.com for a race brochure/entry form.

It's official. The Chuckanut 50K trail run (3/19/05) is sold out.

Boston Marathon 2005: For those of you participating in the Boston Marathon, be sure to stop by at one of the official merchandise sales booths (Saturday, afternoon shift) and say hello to Tony, Chris and Steve, whom will be volunteering their services at the booth. Maniacs Alicia Britt and Marc Frommer may also make a cameo appearance at the booth.

Anyone interested in doing the Deadwood-Mickelson Trail Marathon next June? If so, here are some reduced entry fees, courtesy of Jerry Dunn, the event director (thank you "slug" for spreading the Maniac news!). From December 1st to May 15: $65 full; $45 Half / May 15 to May 30; $75 full; $50 half. Your maniacs can take $10 off the full and $5 of the half of any of the above fees. However, in order to do that, I'd like for them to download the entry form and mail it to me, so as not to have to mess with trying to do this at the online registration site. Be sure to write down that you are a Marathon Maniac.
Additional option: If they want to register on line, at the listed fee, I will give them a $10 coupon for Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon merchandises. (Of course they will have to make me aware that they are in fact MANIACS). Jerry can be contacted at (605) 641-3534.

If you will be participating in any of Elite Racing's Music Marathons, there is a $5 discount for all Maniacs. On the entry form, or on-line form, denote the word CLUB on the coupon code. Their next event is the Country Music Marathon in Nashville (4/30/05). After that, it’s the San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon (6/5/04).

Maniacs Steve Barrick and Jim Anderson once again are presenting the Green River Marathon on June 4 (0830): www.greenrivermarathon.com

North Olympic Discovery Marathon (6/12/05): Race Director Larry Little has offered the Maniacs a discount of $5 for his race. Just be sure to write down on your entry form that you are a Marathon Maniac. He will need to cap the race this year so sign up early.

Race Summaries

January 1

Redding Marathon: Diana "Slug" Robinson, David Reid

Texas Marathon: Cathy Troisi, Lois Berkowitz, Tom Detore

Fat Ass 50-mile: Al Harman

January 2

Fat Ass 50K (Tiger Mt.): Cheri Gillis, Olga Varlamova, Mel Preedy, Tony Covarrubias, Kendell Kreft, Van Phan, Steve Barrick, Robert Hester, Rick Haase, Glenn Tachiyama, Tony Phillippi

First Light Marathon: Tom Detore, Terry Sentinella, Cheryl Murdock.  Here's Terry's summary of the race: The weather was perfect and the course scenic and fairly flat. This race is a jewel. It's hard to believe they have such a small turn out. One of the best run marathons I have been in. Marathon Maniacs must not be very well known down here. I received many comments from marathon watchers like, Go Jar Head! One woman shook my hand and thanked me for my service…my service as a Marine or a Marathon Maniac? Since I am not a Marine I accepted the latter. This is a must do Marathon.

January 8

Bridle Trails 50k Ultra: Tony Covarrubias, Kendall Kreft, Gregg Walchli, Kurt Lauer, Olga Varlamova, Annie Thiessen, Van Phan, Steve Fredrickson and Tony Phillippi.  Since this ultra starts in the afternoon, the majority of the run must be negotiated using headlamps in the muddy, horse poop laden trails of Bridle Trails State Park (Kirkland, Wa).  Perhaps the most amazing stat of the day…Annie(mal) Thiessen and Tony Phillippi ran the entire race without light! Nary a complaint was heard from them; now that's truly INSANE!

MLK Fat Ass 50k Ultra: Sean Meissner

Charlotte Marathon: Keith Panzer

January 9

Rock and Roll Arizona: Diva Burns, Janet Burgess, Laura Bleakley, Sue Fauerbach, Tom Neuman, Ruben Contreras, Stan Neumann, Paul Hargrave, Steve Monk, Dennis Spurlock, Larry Macon and Steven Yee

Disney World Marathon: Lauri Fauerbach Adams, Don Kienz, Rick Korecki.  This is not the first time Don has run this marathon…read his excerpt. Finished my third Disney, and will say this: if you love the Mouse and his friends, and you have children, the Disney marathon is fun, but the long roads between the theme parks (which one runs through a bit) make the sum total of the course neither great nor awful. One time, it's a hoot, visiting all the parks on the run, high-fiving Goofy and giving Mary Poppins a peck on the cheek, it is a good time. The third time though, the bland, vista-less roads become more obvious, and it is harder to recommend. It's well organized though.  Another Maniac perspective of the race came from Rick: My first Disney and 6th marathon this year. Don is exactly right about the long distances between parks...and hey what about the smell as we ran around the back side of Animal Kingdom? Overall I enjoyed it. The organization was fantastic for the numbers of runners. I was amazed that I was able to exit the chutes and hop on a bus direct to my resort without even stopping. I was showered and back on the street within 1 hour of finishing. There are a lot of walkers in this one so it is not the fastest. Living in Florida makes this one convenient, but still not cheap. I will probably run it again.

January 15

Museum of Aviation Marathon: Marie Bartoletti, Keith Panzer, Brenton Floyd and Cheryl Murdock

Mississippi Marathon: Sam Thompson

January 16

Lost Dutchman Marathon: A cool, crisp desert morning greeted Maniacs Maura Schwartz, Sue Fauerbach, Dale Shoup, Tom Detore, Rick Korecki, Robert Lopez and Steven Yee for the 4th annual Lost Dutchman Marathon.  Starting at the base of the Superstition Mountains, the first 6 miles are on a dirt road with stately Saguaro cactuses surrounding you.  Once off the trail, it's main highway running before the undulating hills of Gold Mountain come into play.  Before you know it, you're back on gravel roads and a series of hills culminating in the "Dutchman's Revenge" at mile 23. But we all managed to survive the hills and desert air.  Congratulations to Dale and Steve for placing in their respective age groups and receiving plaques.

Houston Marathon: Susan Bell, Steve Supkoff, Phil Walchli, Larry Macon

San Diego Marathon: Marc Frommer, Carol Dellinger, Brad Bleiweis, David Reid, Diva Burns, Dana Mosell

January 22

Fat Ass 50k (Capitol Peak): Tony Covarrubias, Kurt Lauer, Cheri Gillis, Rick Haase, Glenn Tachiyama, Van Phan, Annie Thiessen, Tony Phillippi and Steven Yee

Fat Ass (Southern Oregon): Sean Meissner

January 23

Florida Gulf Beaches Marathon: Cherl Murdock

January 30

Las Vegas Marathon: Terry Sentinella, Brad Bleiweis, Kevin Brosi, Barb Bumann, Chris Marr, Tom Detore, Marie Bartoletti, Cheryl Murdock, Bill Mandler, Jim Morton, Tom Neuman, John Richeson.  Once again, Vegas proved to be the windy city.  Maniac Barb, looking for redemption for a past LVM DNF offers this sterling account of her race: It was crowded in Las Vegas. I was there after the St. George Marathon in '03, and it wasn't bad at all. But this time you had to stand in line for everything -- a latte, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts exhibit on Monet, dinner.

The Monet show at the Bellagio was exceptionally good. I want to learn more! A little guided tour was conducted with a handheld listening device, which was fine, but mine didn't work very well and that was okay. It was talking to my head, which wasn't where I wanted to experience the paintings.  On Saturday we found our way to the ESPN Zone where Chris Marr (CM) won 100 bucks watching the WSU Cougars trample Arizona in basketball. He also won a bit of money on the Gonzaga game later in the evening.

Oh, the marathon? Well, I'd already made up my mind that unless everything really fell into place, this one would fall into the category of "assisted long run." Because of conditions the longest run we've managed since Tucson on December 5 was 16 miles. I felt capable of running the distance but not up to any speed records. And as it turned out, the headwind put an end to hopes of that! CM was a question mark right up until the last minute. He injured his back earlier in the week and simultaneously developed a nasty head cold and as late as dinner on Saturday night was still contemplating a DNS. On Sunday morning he was dressed and ready, however, so we jogged over to the Excalibur to catch a bus to the start. There was a long line for the buses but it went pretty quickly and in no time we were on our way. The buses waited at the starting line so we could stay aboard and stay warm.

The race started at 7:30 so at 7:10 I got off the bus and made my way to the porta-potty line. Little did I know, I wouldn't be able to find my bus again! (Note to self: remember the bus's NUMBER. They all LOOK alike!) Anyway, CM found me and we lined up at the start and were off. We ran together for the first five or six miles while Chris sorted out how he felt and then he began to pull ahead. I felt like I was struggling, though couldn't put a finger on what the problem was. I focused on Chi running skills -- good posture, picking up my feet, relaxation. Eventually I settled into the run, and just when things were going well - bam! Along came the headwind, and it was brutal.

There was no break until around 20 miles, when they routed us briefly in a different direction. But in no time at all, we were back into the teeth of the wind. At 22 miles I was out of steam and tired of fighting the wind. I found a tall guy and began to draft behind him. That worked so well, by the way, that I had to be careful not to run up the back of his heels! I'm sure it was very annoying, but at mile 23 we changed direction again and I was able to take off on my own. CM thought those last few miles were long and cheerless, which they were, but at least they were not windy so I could cope.

My final time was 4:07, 4:06 with the chip, good enough for 4th in my age group which shows that everyone's times were slow. CM finished just a shade under four hours, in 3:58, so I know he struggled with the conditions as well. Well, I did it. Las Vegas in 1995 was my only DNF so I had unfinished business with the course. Now I don't ever have to think about it again :-).

Miami Tropical Marathon: Don Kienz, Larry Macon and Dana Mosell

In an attempt to make the Marathon Maniacs one of the best and unique running clubs out there, we want to hear how we’re doing.  You as members know what you want and what you don’t want, so don’t hesitate to let us know.  We can’t guarantee that we can accommodate every request, but we’ll do the best we can.

If you have a desire to share your race experience with the rest of the Maniacs, feel free to write up a race report, submit it to us and we’ll post it in the monthly newsletter.  This is a good way to get the info you want into the letter and not just what we might write.
