SHORE TO SHORE MARATHON
September
16, 2006
For the sixth consecutive year it was a pleasure to be at the starting line of the Shore to Shore Marathon at Lake Chelan early in the morning of Saturday, September 16, 2006.
Our weekend host, Hal Porter, had driven us from his home on the north shore near the finish line in Manson to the south shore (close to 25 Mile Park) in plenty of time for the 7:00 a.m. start of the race. Most of the 44 runners arrived on the bus provided by the race personnel.
The temperate weather was conducive to good running conditions with clear and calm skies and temperatures ranging from 55 degrees to the high 60’s.
The early miles of the rolling course took us along the south shore through a Douglas Fir/Ponderosa Pine forest with views of snow-topped mountains in the distance, the nearby lake and the north shore. There was little traffic, so it was peaceful when we began our 26.2 mile journey around the lake.
The second half of the course took us through the town of Chelan and then to the north shore’s orchards, vineyards and tourist areas on the way to the finish line near the park in downtown Manson. There the runners received finishers medals, race T-shirts and plenty of good food and drinks.
The marathon was won by Eric Freeberg, 40, of Seattle with a time of 3:02:51. He plans to relocate to Wenatchee soon and wants to become involved in the running community there. The second overall finisher was a WOMAN!! Anne Armstrong, 44, of Poulsbo ran a 3:09:23 to capture the title for the ladies.
In third and fourth place overall were Tim Slesk, 37, of Wenatchee (3:09:53) and Gregg Walchli, 44, of Seattle (3:11:45). Jennifer Yogi, 31, of Seattle was the second women’s finisher with a time of 3:27:56, and Sherry Wille, 42, of Vernon, BC, was third (3:52:26).
Sherry ran the race with her husband, Jon Mahoney, 54, of Vernon, BC, and they finished together, as they had done six days earlier at the Skagit Flats Marathon on September 10th. Others who ran these two races were Gregg Walchli, Mel Preedy, 73, of Ravensdale, Tony Rotherdam, 65, of Surrey, BC, and myself.
For this race I started close to the back of the pack and passed a few runners along the way. I ran and walked the last 10K with no other runners in sight and crossed the finish line in 5:03:54, 35th of 44 finishers and first in the 75+M division. It had been a good day for me, and I was happy with my second best time of the 17 marathons I’ve run this year.
Congratulations to the First-Timers: Brianna Allred, 22, Palo Alto, CA; Erin Allred, 27, Royal City; Kristi Timme, 26, Pullman; and Kaitlin Keller, 17, Atherton, CA.
Thanks go to our host family, Patty & Hal Porter, and to race director Jane Farris, the Chelan Parks personnel and volunteers for their efforts in providing the marathon, half marathon and 10K races at beautiful Lake Chelan.
If my records are correct, I’m the only runner who has completed all six Shore to Shore Marathons. I’ll be back next year to keep this string going!
