LAKE CHELAN SHORE TO SHORE MARATHON

September 15, 2007

The Lake Chelan Marathon is a delight to run, from the Fields Point Landing along the south shore to downtown Manson on the north shore.  A 7:00 a.m. start in the rolling, forested terrain ensured a cool, shaded scenic run.  Elevated above the narrow lake, there were excellent views of the far shore, the backdrop of mountains and the town of Manson.

As the run proceeded eastward, temperatures rose and shade became scarce.  We ran through the town of Chelan and then along the north shore to the finish.  On Saturday, September 15, 2007, the sky was clear and the temperature was in the mid 80’s by the time I reached the finish line and found Lenore waiting for me there with a finisher’s medal and a hug.

It was a good race.  At the start, I noticed a runner charge down the paved road with an ever-increasing lead.  This runner was Marlene Farrell, 32, of Leavenworth who won the race in a great time of 2:58:14.  This was only the third marathon of my 411 marathons/ultras that was won by a woman.  Congratulations, Marlene!!!

She’s not a stranger to winning.  She was the women’s winner of our Yakima River Canyon Marathon in 2002 with a time of 3:10:00.  Two months ago on July 8, 2007, she ran a 2:58:48 and was the second woman overall at the Virginia Mason Seafair Marathon at Bellevue.

In second, third and fourth place overall were Todd Knowles, 44, of Shoreline (3:13:54); Chris Warren, 40, Marathon Maniac (MM) of Renton (3:18:57); and Mike Koslosky, 49, of Everett (3:28:19).  James Klarich, 45, MM from Wapato, was sixth overall with a 3:35:14

Jodie Brautaset, 32, of Mt. Vernon was the second woman finisher with a 3:27:38, while Sherry Mahoney, 43, MM of Vernon, BC, was third with a 3:45:32.

Congratulations to Jon Mahoney, 55, MM from Vernon, BC, for completing his 250th marathon!  This member of the 100 Marathon Club North America, finished first in the 55-59M division with a 3:45:33.

Jon’s wife and running partner, Sherry, showed her running prowess by winning her 40-44F division.

Congratulations to two runners for setting new “Personal Records.”  Kirk Hudson, 40, our nephew from Wenatchee ran a 3:44:40 and won third place in the 40-44M division.  Leslie Miller, 27, MM from Bellevue, ran a 4:23:55.  Since running the Eugene Marathon on April 29, 2007, she has been running 1-2 marathons or ultramarathons every weekend for an impressive total!!

Mel Preedy, 74, MM of Ravensdale, is well on the way to recovery from an injury.  His time of 5:30:52 was almost 35 minutes faster than his race the previous weekend at the Skagit Flats Marathon.  He finished first in the 70-74M age group.

Ralph Riddick, 75, of Spokane took first place in the 75+M division.  We’ve known each other for twenty or more years, and it’s good to see that he has returned to marathoning this year.  We ran together from about the 15th to 17th miles and then he pulled away and maintained his lead until he finished in a time of 5:42:26.

I walked the last 10K which has become part of my routine lately and finished in 5:49:11……slow, but six minutes faster than the summer marathons at Seafair and Skagit Flats.  I finished 38th of 39 overall and second in the 75+M age group.

Finishing next in six hours plus was Steve Love, 53, of Mansfield.  He has shoulder, lower back and foot problems that hampered his running.  We’ve been running together in marathons for over fifteen years.  He ran his first marathon at the Drake Relays Marathon in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1973 while he was a student and track team member at Grayson College in Iowa.  Among his 85 marathons, he has run 27 times at Coeur d’ Alene and all seven of the Yakima River Canyon Marathons.

In the half marathon Mary Klarich, 44, of Wapato, ran a 1:57:42 for second place in the 40-44F division.  Keith Wood, 78, of Sultan ran a 2:01:50 to place 41st out of 123 finishers and to win the 75+ age group.  What a great race!

Thanks to Hal and Patty Porter of Manson for hosting Lenore and me for the seventh consecutive year.  I’ve run the Lake Chelan Shore to Shore Marathon since its debut in 2001 and hope to continue running it for many years to come.
