Briar-Rose: the 13 Year Old Double Agent

This week we would like to highlight Double Agent member #3444 Briar-Rose. Briar-Rose started running at the young age of eight. Her love of running began as a simple cross-training exercise for figure skating and over time as she began running longer distances she commented, "I might as well get some bling for it." She says that what inspired her to keep running was seeing the different number of people at marathons. Whether old or young, large or small, watching individuals overcome their obstacles inspired her.

Briar-Rose has completed three 5Ks, two 15Ks, 14 half marathons, and seven full marathons. She has even been the overall female winner in one of her 5K races! Being so young in a crowd of older men and women she has never lost courage or determination. She says that her favorite part about running races is, "[Proving] to everyone that with the right training and support children are capable of running these races and we should not be stopped from achieving our goals and dreams because of other peoples outdated beliefs."

Briar says that her goal is to follow her mother's footsteps and run the Boston Marathon in 2024, which will be held one day after her 18th birthday! As of right now she is only eight minutes off of her qualifying time for the Boston Marathon. Great job Briar-Rose, your achievements are amazing and we know you'll continue to have amazing runs in the future. We can't wait to see you accomplish all of your goals!

Hyland's Healer Team Pick: Jaime Richard

This year Hyland, The Official Cramp Relief Sponsor of the Boston Marathon, has hand-selected 18 selfless health professionals from more than 500 applications from across America to celebrate. We would like to congratulate our own Maniac member #10384 Jamie Richard from Washington state who has been chosen to be on the Hyland's 2019 Boston Marathon Healer Team.

Richard serves as a pediatric ER nurse as well as a hospital supervisor at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma, WA. She has dedicated her life to improving children's health and says, "I absolutely love taking care of kids, it's the best job." She says that running has undoubtedly contributed positively to her professional life. “Running has given me self confidence in all areas of my life, especially at work,” she says. “Running has made me realize that I am a leader.”

In her eight years running, she has completed 29 marathon, three 50-mile races, and several 50Ks. This 2019 she will complete her forth Boston Marathon as a Healer. Richard comments, "I believe that being a runner and Healer go hand in hand, as Healers we always persevere." Awesome job Jaime, you're such an inspiration to us all and we wish you the best of luck!

Maniac to run 200th Marathon in April

Maniac #3086 and Titanium level member Heather Zeigler is set to run her 200th Marathon on April 28th, 2019 at the London Marathon. Just like many Maniacs, Heather ran her first marathon and instantly became hooked, first with the goal of 50 marathons before turning 50, but when she quickly reached her goal she thought why stop there?

Heather’s favorite marathon was her first Boston Marathon. “I will always say that my first Boston marathon was one of my favorites. It took a LOT of work to get there and to be there after over 80 marathons and to finally feel like a good runner was extremely rewarding and emotional. I cried during that marathon too!” Marathons are emotional, we can only imagine how crossing the finish line of number 200 will feel for Heather. (www.cararuns.org)

We can not wait to celebrate with Heather as she reaches her 200th marathon goal this year! Wishing her the best of luck on her running journey.

Are you reaching a running goal? Share your story with us! Send us an email at info@marathonmaniacs.com with your story and a photo to be featured on our blog.

13 year old Double Agent

Jason just completed the Houston Marathon, 1/20/18, which was his 3rd Marathon, 3rd State and his first as a Maniac/Double Agent. (Maniac #14570 & Fanatic #17131) He has completed 5 Half Marathons and 3 Full Marathons.

Jason’s running story begins when he was 4 and I was leaving to go run a Half Marathon. I was giving him a kiss goodbye and he started crying. He told me he thought he was running the race too. I bent down and looked in his eyes and said “when you are old enough, you can run with me.” I never expected him to run a marathon.

He started running 5k’s with me when he was 9. When he was 10, he started trying to sneak on my long runs and I finally let him. That was the beginning of him running long distance. Since he was running long runs with me, he decided to run a Half Marathon and ran his first at 11.

Jason says he started running to spend time with me. Jason has many hours to talk with me while we run and he enjoys the one on one time. Jason's Racing.
Maniacs & Fanatics Pace Team

Back in August The Maniac Fanatic pace team was approached by Marine Corps Marathon to take on the task of pacing their Marathon. http://www.marinemarathon.com/ It was pretty short notice but we managed to fill all 11 pace time requests with 22 Marathon Maniacs and Half Fanatics.
http://www.marathonmaniacs.com/mcm-pacing/

We collaborated with MCM to add a new pace time to Beat the Bridge. If you didn’t make the cut off at mile 20 you would be diverted to an alternate course to the finish. Our Beat the Bridge pace team beat the bridge. Mission accomplished!

Special thanks to Andy Castaldi who stepped up to set up the MCM Pacing booth and pace the 3 hour group.

Congratulations to all the Marine Corps finishers!

The group had a successful run and we hope to be back next year.
